So, the UK finds itself in yet another national lockdown. In between working from home, home-schooling children, perhaps being a key worker or just generally trying to keep your household in order, giving your home a regular clean is extremely beneficial. It not only keeps your household in good health, helps with physical health (hoovering for 30 minutes can burn up to 166 calories!) but also assists with your mental health. Let’s face it, everyone could use a bit of a boost when it comes to mental health at the moment.

Below are our top tips for giving you and your home that dusting down you both may need.

Start by de-cluttering

By removing clutter and putting items away, it clears surfaces and prevents dust and dirt from accumulating around your home. The less clutter there is, the less dust and dirt they’ll be around those items. The physical act of throwing things away which aren’t needed and seeing clear space form can also be very therapeutic and good for the mind!

Once surfaces are clear, disinfect!

Now that you have clear surfaces, you can clean and disinfect them with your preferred brand. Use a clean microfibre cloth and pour some solution directly onto the cloth or spray the disinfectant/antibacterial solution onto your surfaces. Ensure that you wipe right up to the edges of the surface to make sure you the whole area is thoroughly clean. If you have a scented disinfectant, it will leave your surfaces smelling fresh and fragrant for hours.

Use antibacterial wipes or solution to wipe touch points

This is one of the most important things you can do when cleaning, especially to reduce the risk of coronavirus infection. Of course, handwashing should be done as regularly as possible but sometimes with numerous people living in one household, this is vital to ensure risk of infection is kept to a minimum. Common areas to wipe with antibacterial solution are light switches, door handles, cupboard doors, kettle handles, fridge doors, remote controls, and anything else that you know you and the rest of your family use or touch on a daily basis.

Hoover your home

It is important to hoover after you have wiped and cleared all surfaces as there is a strong possibility dirt and dust will fall onto the floor. Hoovering will pick up dirt and grime that is embedded into your carpet. Alternatively if you do not have carpet in your home, you should mop and use a cleaning solution which has disinfectant in it and mix this with hot water.

Finally…light a scented candle or wax melt

Personally, once I have cleaned my home, I find nothing more satisfying than to light one of my scented candles or to switch on my electric wax melt. It fills my home with a lovely fragrance, and I know that I can sit back and relax in my clean home and look at what I have achieved by cleaning. Carrying out a spring clean is extremely good for the mind, therapeutic and an extremely important routine to get into to ensure your health is priority not just throughout lockdown but even after this virus has passed.
